Dear Patents and Scouts,
Most of your sons recently worked on or earned their Radio Merit Badge and/or expressed interest in building a crystal radio. In conjunction with the merit badge, me and the other instructor thought it would be fun and educational for your scouts to build crystal radios. This simple project puts several concepts they learned about into practice. They’ll also have a brief introduction into electronic schematics.
We will be building crystal radios during the Electronics Lock-in this weekend. If your son isn’t attending, I’ll coordinate for another build opportunity soon for them.
There is no cost to you nor charge to your scout account with the troop. The scoutmaster has graciously agreed for the troop to cover the cost for the radio components (approx. $12).
I’ll provide tools to use. Though they aren’t needed very much. If they’d like to bring their own tools, please label or mark them in someway that indicates who they belong to. Writing your last name on a piece of tape on the tool is best. I recommend bringing:
- Needle-nose pliers
- Philips screw driver (size 2, sometimes its stamped on the handle as Ph2 or P2, or any regular size head is fine)
- Wire cutter (You don’t need a separate wire cutter if your needle-nose pliers have a wire cutter)
- Optional: Pocket knife, Scissors, and a Multimeter
I’m sorry for the lateness of this announcement.
Yours in Scouting, Jason Manro, Asst Scoutmaster, Troop 101
